Vitamin D And Thyroid Health

Posted by Dr. Ridha Arem on

Vitamin D is probably best known for its role in bone health, but some new research has begun to shed light on the potentially important implications of vitamin D in immune system health. One recent study evaluated vitamin D levels of other older people and the presence of inflammatory “markers” (substances secreted by the body during an immune response that indicate inflammation). These markers were found in higher concentrations in older patients with low vitamin D levels. Interestingly, these markers can also be found in high concentrations among patients with inflammatory conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Another study of over 3,000 participants revealed a correlation between low levels of vitamin D and autoimmune thyroid disease in premenopausal women, indicating a potential interaction of vitamin D with estrogen to increase a patient’s risk of developing the disease. Vitamin D appears to have a particularly significant link to Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, as deficiencies occur frequently with the disorder.

Whether you are looking to supplement your vitamin D intake because of an existing deficiency, or because you simply want to maintain optimal levels of this essential nutrient, we recommend using a high-quality vitamin D3 supplement without additive or dyes that could potentially inhibit gastrointestinal absorption. Many people prefer to take a combination vitamin D and Calcium supplement (such as our own Ultra Calcium D3 supplement; however, a liquid vitamin D3 supplement such as ThyroLife Liquid Vitamin D3 as it is more bioavailable and designed to be taken on a weekly basis (10,000 IU per dose), which is much easier to keep up with consistently. It is part of the unique line of supplements for thyroid wellness designed by Dr. Ridha Arem, Houston endocrinologist, thyroid specialist, and author of The Thyroid Solution.
