Carefully read supplement labels to ensure you are getting the right mix and amounts of micronutrients

Remember, as a thyroid patient, you may need higher amounts of nutrients than non-thyroid patients to keep your immune system less reactive. Look for supplements that contain 2,500 IU of vitamin A as beta-carotene, 150 to 200 IU of Vitamin E, 200 mg of Magnesium, 50 to 100 mcg of Selenium, and 10 to 15 mg of Zinc. B vitamins (including Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, and Pantothenic Acid) are also generally under-dosed. Similarly, avoid supplements that contain exorbitant amounts of certain micronutrients and minerals. It is all about balance, not too little, not too much. You also need to ensure your thyroid supplement contains many other crucial antioxidants and ingredients to support your immune system and keep your thyroid gland as healthy as possible. Select a supplement free of calcium and iron
Both Calcium and Iron interfere with thyroid medication absorption because they can form a complex that will essentially “wrap itself around” the thyroid hormone, preventing it from being absorbed. This is a problem for hypothyroid patients as taking multivitamins with iron and/or calcium within 4 hours of taking thyroid hormone will result in less thyroid hormone being absorbed, consequently making it less effective. High amounts of calcium and iron mixed with precious micronutrients also have the negative effect of diluting out these micronutrients. It is best to take a high quality, multi-source calcium supplement such as Ultra Calcium D3 at least 4 hours after taking thyroid medicine.
